Udemy Course Review: Blogging MasterClass
Overall Rating
Four out of five (Good).
The course is decent, covers all the aspects of creating a blog from scratch, and monetizing it. However, this information is available for free on the internet, hence deducting one point.
The good thing this course does is to collate everything in one place, and present it in a sequential manner.
Who is this course for?
- Professional writers, looking to create their personal blog and earn money.
- Novice to intermediate writers who plan to make money by writing.
- Existing bloggers, who want quick tips on improving their blog content, discoverability, and efficient ways to make money from the blogs
- Business owners who want to increase reach of their business
- Aspiring book writers, who want to get in the habit of writing
- Folks looking to increase their network in the nice they work in
Woah – that is a quite lot of segment of users who can benefit from this course. This is what surprised me as well. There are some segments which I was overlooking before I took this course – such as folks looking to promote their business, or those looking to write a novel but do not know how to start a good writing habit.
Well said….
Top Three Learnings from the course
Learning 1 – Setting right expectations: Brad (the lecturer) sets the right expectations with us, explaining this is not a quick way to be a millionaire. It takes time, dedication, and discipline to get noticed, and become an accomplished writer. Knowing the “why” you want to start a blog is important to plan the strategy to get you there.
Learning 2: WordPress.com and top plugins: Brad explains, in layman terms, how to set up a personalized website-blog using wordpress.org. He also suggests top free and paid wordpress plugins one can use for keyword, SEO etc. This is immensely helpful for those who are just starting out to create a blog site for them.
Learning 3: Monetizing your blog: Although there is only one section (the last one) on monetizing your blog. I believe the build up to creating content of the blog, making it discoverable; does half the job of monetize your blog. Brad gives further tips on generating revenue from your blogs using advertising and affiliate marketing.
Plugins to the rescue – some useful, some free, some paid
What I liked about the course?
Like 1 – Clear easy to understand language: Brad uses clear and easy to understand language. I was watching the video course and taking notes at the same time. I watched the course at 1.5x speed, and it was clear.
Like 2 – Using Infographics to communicate: Brad uses lots of colorful and fun infographics to communicate his ideas and main points throughout the course. You will not be watching the lecturer’s face throughout the 3.5 hours of video course length.
Like 3 – Focus on small things which are often neglected: Brad gives focus on small things such as website name, blog title etc. which are often ignored. Brad reinforces the fact that the attention span of internet readers is less, and if one is unable to catch readers’ attention to click on a blog link by looking at the title, then you have lost a potential paid reader.
Nothing is more rewarding than being paid for your efforts
What could have improved?
Opportunity 1 – Examples of successful bloggers: Nothing motivates aspiring writers more than hearing examples of previous successful bloggers. Brad could have included some successful writers who made a decent amount of money by using the tactics he shares in the video course.
Opportunity 2 – WordPress Centric Video Course: This video course is only focused on using WordPress for hosting blog sites. However, if a viewer is already invested in other blog hosting platforms such as Web.com or Wix, then you might not get the most from this course. You will get an overview of using wordpress.org though, and can compare if you want to keep on using your existing blog hosting platform or switch to WordPress.
Opportunity 3 – No mention of Blogging Marketplace platforms: There is no mention or info on blogging marketplace platforms, such as Medium, Vocal, HubSpot etc. These are decent platforms for regular writers to write and earn money. Brad designed this video only for those who want to open a dedicated personal blogging website using wordpress.org. However this course might disappoint those who do not want to invest into creating a blogging site, and rather try out other more popular blogging platforms such as HubSpot.
